Best Countryside Hotels in Northamptonshire and Where 14 Acres Fits In

A practical 2026 guide to the best countryside hotels in Northamptonshire, plus how 14 Acres in Clipston compares for couples, families and groups.

At A Glance

Northamptonshire countryside hotels range from Georgian manor houses to luxury barn retreats, and the right pick depends on whether you want hotel service, family space or full exclusive use.

  • Rushton Hall, Whittlebury Hall and The Falcon are the best-known traditional country house hotels in the county.
  • For luxury self-catering, 14 Acres in Clipston is one of the few options offering exclusive use for up to 19 guests.
  • Most countryside hotels here charge from £180 a night per room; self-catering retreats start from £119 a night.
  • Drive time between any two countryside locations in Northamptonshire is rarely more than 35 minutes.
  • All the venues below have free parking and easy A14, A43 or M1 access.

Guests often ask me to compare 14 Acres against the better-known countryside hotels in Northamptonshire, so I have written this guide as a calm, honest overview rather than a top-10 listicle. I will tell you what each type does well, and what tradeoffs you should expect.

Northamptonshire is genuinely one of the prettiest under-rated counties for a rural break. Big skies, gentle hills, manor houses, working canals and good local pubs, all within an hour of London by train. You can choose a traditional country house hotel, a spa hotel, or a luxury self-catering retreat, and each has a different rhythm.

I will start with the traditional hotels, then explain where 14 Acres fits, and finish with practical drive times so you can plan a multi-stop trip if you want.

Traditional country house hotels in Northamptonshire

If you want full hotel service (concierge, restaurant, daily breakfast service, spa) the strong shortlist is Rushton Hall near Kettering, Whittlebury Hall near Towcester (closer to Silverstone), Fawsley Hall, and The Falcon at Castle Ashby. All four are full-service hotels with restaurants and many have spa facilities.

These hotels do the proper country-house weekend brilliantly: afternoon tea, formal dinner, a spa morning. They are often the right pick for couples on a special weekend or short anniversary breaks where you do not want to think about cooking.

The trade-off is space and privacy. You are sharing the building with other guests and family rooms are tighter than you might expect. If you have small children, ask carefully about cot policy, blackout blinds and noise from corridors.

Spa and resort hotels: Whittlebury and Stoke Park

If a spa morning is the centrepiece of the trip, Whittlebury Park is the obvious choice for the south of the county. It runs a large spa, golf, and is a 20-minute drive from Silverstone. It is genuinely good for couples wanting hotel-grade pampering.

Stoke Park (just over the Buckinghamshire border) is the other big resort name within reach. It is at a different price point and feels more corporate.

Both work well for a one or two night spa stay; neither is the best base for a longer family or group holiday.

Where 14 Acres fits: luxury self-catering with hotel-level finish

I built 14 Acres specifically because most country house hotels do not work well for family or group travel. We needed somewhere that felt as luxurious as a 5-star hotel but had the space, kitchen and flexibility of a private home.

What you get: three boutique retreats (The Barn, The Loft, The Cottage) on a private 14-acre estate, available individually or together. Hotel-level beds, linens and bath products. Smart TVs, fibre internet, Amazon Echo, free secure parking with EV charging. Optional private chef and massage. Daily housekeeping on stays of 3 nights or more.

What you do not get: a hotel restaurant on site. We give you breakfast provisions and a fully equipped kitchen, plus a tight short list of nearby pubs in our restaurants near The Cottage in Clipston dining guide for dinners out.

  • Three retreats, sleeping 4 to 19 guests in total.
  • From £119 a night.
  • No shared corridors, full privacy.
  • Family-ready: cots, high chairs, board games, Xbox, Disney+.

Drive times between Northamptonshire countryside hotels

The county is small enough that you can stay at one base and visit several others in a day. From 14 Acres in Clipston:

Rushton Hall is around 25 minutes east. Fawsley Hall is around 35 minutes south. Whittlebury Park is around 40 minutes south-west. Stoke Park is around an hour. The Falcon at Castle Ashby is around 25 minutes south-east. Burghley House (over the county line in Lincolnshire) is around 45 minutes north.

If you want to combine a 14 Acres stay with one or two restaurant or spa visits to the larger hotels, the timings work easily. Several of my regulars do exactly this.

Practical visitor tips

If you are travelling with children, prioritise self-catering or hotels with dedicated family rooms and confirmed cot setups before you book. Our family-friendly places to stay near Market Harborough guide has a tighter shortlist for that.

Visit the official Northamptonshire tourism site for up-to-date events listings and seasonal openings; some country houses close indoor sections in winter even if grounds remain open.

A note from Susan

“I have stayed at most of the country house hotels in this county and they each do something well. 14 Acres is the option I built because none of them gave me the privacy, space and kitchen I wanted as a parent with friends visiting. We are genuinely a different kind of stay.”

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best country house hotel in Northamptonshire?

There is no single best, but Rushton Hall, Fawsley Hall and Whittlebury Park are the most popular full-service options. Each suits a slightly different trip profile. Rushton for romantic, Fawsley for grand-historic, Whittlebury for spa weekends.

Is 14 Acres a hotel or a self-catering rental?

14 Acres is luxury self-catering with hotel-level finish. We provide the bed quality, linens, breakfast provisions and personal service of a boutique hotel, plus the privacy, kitchen and flexibility of a private home.

Can I get exclusive use of a property in Northamptonshire?

Yes. 14 Acres can be booked as exclusive use for groups up to 19 guests across The Barn, The Loft and The Cottage. Few country house hotels in the county will offer full exclusive use without minimum spend or wedding-only terms.

Do countryside hotels in Northamptonshire have spas?

Whittlebury Park has the largest spa in the area. Several country house hotels (Rushton, Fawsley) offer in-room treatments rather than full spa facilities. At 14 Acres we offer optional in-stay massage by appointment.

Are these hotels good for families?

Most country house hotels can accommodate families but rooms are tight and noise carries in older buildings. Self-catering retreats like 14 Acres are usually a better fit for families with small children, with cots, high chairs and proper kitchens.

How far are these hotels from London?

Most are around 90 minutes by car from north-west London. By train, Market Harborough is about an hour from London St Pancras and the closest station to 14 Acres.

Do they offer dog-friendly rooms?

Some country house hotels offer dog-friendly rooms with notice. 14 Acres is currently not dog-friendly, which keeps cleanliness consistent for guests with allergies.
