Winter Lodge Breaks in Northamptonshire: Cosy Stays at 14 Acres

Winter lodge breaks in Northamptonshire at 14 Acres, Clipston: three underfloor-heated retreats for 2 to 19 guests, Christmas events for 2026 and frosty walks nearby.

At A Glance

14 Acres in Clipston offers warm, peaceful winter lodge breaks in the Northamptonshire countryside, with three underfloor-heated retreats sleeping 2 to 19 guests.

  • Every lodge has underfloor heating with its own touch-screen control in each room
  • The Cottage sleeps 4, The Loft 6 and The Barn 8, or book the whole estate for up to 19
  • Christmas at Wicksteed Park runs on 5-6, 12-13 and 19-24 December 2026, about 25 minutes away
  • Foxton Locks, ten locks in two staircases, is a 17-minute drive for a winter towpath walk
  • Flex rate bookings can be changed or cancelled up to 30 days before arrival

Winter brings out the natural side of the countryside around Clipston. Frost settles on the fields, birds gather in the bare hedgerows, and the best part of the day is coming back from a cold walk to a warm floor and a long evening in. Our smallest retreat, The Cottage, suits couples who want exactly that: a short break with nothing to organise and nowhere you have to be.

For bigger winter gatherings, from a family Christmas to a New Year with friends, we open all three retreats together as one exclusive-use estate for up to 19 guests. A winter lodge break in Northamptonshire comes down to four choices: the right lodge for your group, the extras that make a short stay easy, the Christmas events worth booking this year, and the frosty walks we send guests on when the weather turns.

We are on the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire border, about ten minutes from Market Harborough and roughly an hour and a half from London by car. That makes a winter weekend here easy to reach on a Friday afternoon and gives you most of Saturday and Sunday for the things that matter on a cold weekend, which are sleeping well, eating well and getting outside for a few hours of daylight.

Winter Lodge Breaks in Northamptonshire at 14 Acres

The Cottage at 14 Acres in Clipston at dusk, with warm light in the windows
The Cottage at dusk. In December the sun sets before 4pm, so evenings in are a big part of a winter stay.

Winter lodges only work if they are genuinely warm, and ours were built with that in mind. All three retreats run on underfloor heating with individual touch-screen zone controls in every room, so the bathroom can be warm for the morning while the bedrooms stay cool for sleeping. Arriving on a freezing Friday night, you can take your boots off onto a warm floor within minutes of opening the door.

The estate sits on 14 acres of private grounds with a pond, lawns and views over open farmland, and in winter the grounds come alive with nature, from ducks and birds on the pond to frost across the lawns first thing in the morning. You will not be sharing a lake, a clubhouse or a car park with a hundred other cabins. That privacy is what sets our lodges in Northamptonshire apart from a holiday park, and it is most obvious in the dark months when the only light outside comes from the lodge windows.

Each lodge is self-contained with its own kitchen, living space and outdoor area, and we look after the details that make a short winter break easier. Breakfast provisions are waiting when you arrive, housekeeping is daily, and there is fast fibre internet if one of you needs to work for a morning. The rest of the time is yours.

Winter Lodge Holidays: Choosing Your Lodge in Clipston

The Barn’s open-plan living space, with a 10-metre glass wall onto its private garden.

The right lodge for a winter holiday depends mostly on who is coming. Couples tend to want somewhere small and snug, families need bedrooms that can switch between doubles and twins, and larger groups at Christmas or New Year want to be together without being on top of each other. Our three retreats compare as follows, with the layouts and capacities taken from our booking page.

Rates at The Cottage start from £119 a night, and every lodge shows live winter prices and availability on our booking calendar. Infants under 24 months stay free in The Barn and on exclusive-use stays, which helps on family winter breaks where a cot and a high chair matter more than an extra bedroom.

If you are unsure between two lodges, think about how you will spend the evenings. The Barn is built around one long open-plan room, which suits a group that wants to cook, eat and watch a film together. The Loft and The Cottage are more private, with their living spaces arranged so that a couple or a small family can shut the door on the world for a few days.

What Makes a Cosy Winter Lodge Stay in Northamptonshire

A dark living room at 14 Acres with a film on the television and a bowl of popcorn on the table
Film night is the most popular winter evening at 14 Acres. Every lodge has Netflix and Disney+.

A cosy winter break is mostly about the small things being done for you. When the weather keeps you in for an afternoon, you want the heating to be simple, the beds to be comfortable and the fridge to have something in it. Every winter booking includes the following as standard.

Included in every winter stay

  • Underfloor heating and air conditioning, controlled room by room from touch screens
  • Breakfast provisions on arrival: fresh milk, bread, butter, cereals, jams and marmalade, coffee and teas
  • Daily housekeeping, so you are not tidying up on a short break
  • Super king beds with luxury linens, and blackout blinds or shutters in every bedroom
  • Smart TVs with free Netflix and Disney+, plus Amazon Echo speakers with Amazon Music Unlimited
  • Free parking, Type 2 electric car chargers and keyless code entry for late arrivals

Blackout blinds sound like a summer feature, but in winter they mean you can sleep past the late sunrise and wake up properly rested. The keyless entry matters too. Many of our winter guests arrive after dark on a Friday, and a personal door code sent before arrival means nobody has to wait around in the cold to hand over keys.

For the evenings you would rather not cook, we can arrange a private chef in your lodge, and in-lodge massage is also available, both booked through our online check-in and subject to availability. It is worth booking these early for December and New Year, when demand is highest.

Christmas Lodge Breaks in Northamptonshire

Christmas lodge breaks at 14 Acres work in two ways. You can take one lodge for a few quiet days either side of Christmas, or book the whole estate so that three generations can spend Christmas together, each with their own space to retreat to at the end of the day. Both work well here because the lodges are close enough to share meals but separate enough for everyone to sleep properly.

We are happy to help make a Christmas or anniversary stay feel special. Champagne, chocolates, flowers and helium balloons can be waiting in your lodge when you arrive, and we work with a local artisan cake maker for birthdays. These are arranged through our online check-in up to 24 hours before arrival, and a private chef can take care of a festive dinner if nobody wants to spend the day in the kitchen.

Northamptonshire and the Harborough district also have a strong programme of Christmas events within half an hour of Clipston. These are the ones we recommend for winter 2026, with every date confirmed so far. Where a venue has not yet published its 2026 dates, we say so rather than guess.

Fixed holiday dates such as Christmas and New Year have the least flexibility, so we recommend booking as soon as your plans are settled. If you are flexible, the weeks either side of Christmas bring the same frosty walks, bare winter woods and festive market towns.

New Year and January Lodge Breaks Near Market Harborough

New Year lodge breaks suit groups who would rather see in the new year with friends around a table than in a crowded bar. With the whole estate booked, up to 19 guests can share the evening and still have a proper bed to walk back to, and nobody needs to worry about getting a taxi home. For smaller groups, The Loft and The Barn both have the space for a long dinner and a late night.

January is one of the best months for a short countryside break. Frost settles on the fields, the bare hedgerows make it easier to spot birds and wildlife, and a two or three night stay in the middle of the month is a simple way to rest after a busy December. A January break in the UK is also good value for anyone on the Flex rate, because dates can move if the weather turns.

Winter weekends here usually follow a pattern: a late breakfast, a walk while the light is good, a pub lunch, and an early return to a warm lodge. The Bulls Head in Clipston and The George at Great Oxendon are both within ten minutes, and it is worth booking a table at weekends. After a walk at Foxton Locks, the canalside pub at Bridge 61 is a popular stop before the drive back.

Winter Walks Near Clipston and Market Harborough

Short daylight hours mean the best winter walks are the ones that start close by and have something to see along the way. We recommend three between November and February, all within 20 minutes of the estate. Each can be done in a morning, with time to be back at the lodge before it gets dark. There are more options in our guide to walking trails in Northamptonshire.

1. Foxton Locks and the Grand Union Canal

Foxton Locks is a flight of ten locks arranged in two staircases of five, climbing the hillside on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal. The locks opened in October 1813 and are Grade II* listed. In winter the canal traffic is lighter, and on a frosty morning the view down the flight towards the basin is one of the best in the county.

It is a 17-minute drive from 14 Acres. Park at the top, walk down the flight to the basin, visit the Foxton Canal Museum in the old boiler house of the inclined plane, and warm up in one of the canalside pubs. Our Foxton Locks day out guide has the full route, including a stop at Naseby on the way back.

2. The Brampton Valley Way and the Kelmarsh Tunnel

The Brampton Valley Way follows the line of the old Northampton to Market Harborough railway, which closed in 1981 and reopened as a path in 1993. It runs for 14 miles and is part of National Cycle Network Route 6. Because it follows a former railway line the gradients are gentle, which makes it a comfortable winter walk for mixed ages.

The stretch closest to Clipston passes the Kelmarsh Tunnel, 480 metres long and unlit, with a path over the top for anyone who would rather not walk through. Bring a head torch if you do, and good boots, as any countryside path can be muddy in winter. It is an easy route for families because you can turn back at any point.

3. Welland Park in Market Harborough

For a gentler afternoon, Welland Park is a peaceful green space in the middle of Market Harborough, about ten minutes from the estate. It has open lawns for a short loop, a playground, a skate and BMX area for older children, table tennis and a park café, so it works well for families who want an easy hour outside.

In late November and December, combine it with the Christmas lights and late-night shopping in the town. Market Harborough has a good mix of independent shops and cafes, and the walk from the park to The Square takes about ten minutes.

Things to Do in Northamptonshire in Winter

Northamptonshire in winter is at its best for anyone who likes a mix of fresh air, historic houses and small market towns. Most outdoor attractions run shorter hours from November, and some of the big houses close their interiors until spring, so it is worth checking before you set out. These are the winter days out our guests enjoy most.

1. Christmas at Wicksteed Park, Kettering

Christmas at Wicksteed Park runs on 5-6, 12-13 and 19-24 December 2026. Tickets are £17 for adults and £22 for children, and include a visit to Santa, open rides such as the railway and carousel, a Christmas craft space, a festive trail and a gift from the Elf’s Workshop for every child. Santa slots run from 9.20am, and on Christmas Eve the park closes at 3pm.

The park is about 25 minutes from 14 Acres, and it books up quickly on weekends, so it is best to reserve a slot on the official Wicksteed Park Christmas page before you travel. Our Wicksteed Park guide covers parking and the rest of the park.

2. Christmas at Kelmarsh Hall

Kelmarsh Hall, a Palladian country house a few minutes from Clipston, runs a winter programme of wreath-making workshops, a Christmas fair and festive open days, when the house is dressed for the season. Previous fairs have filled the historic rooms with artisan stalls, and the servants’ quarters have been set out as a Victorian Christmas.

Kelmarsh Hall publishes its dates each autumn, and the popular sessions sell out, so check kelmarsh.com or call 01604 686543 once the 2026 programme is announced. It is close enough to fit into a morning without disturbing the rest of your day.

3. Market Harborough Christmas Lights and Late-Night Shopping

Market Harborough switches on its Christmas lights on a Saturday evening in late November, with the tree in The Square lit up and late-night shopping in the town. In 2025 the switch-on took place on 22 November, with festivities from 5pm and the lights at 6.30pm.

Through December the town is a good place for Christmas shopping away from the big retail parks, with independent shops, a regular market and plenty of places to stop for lunch. It is about ten minutes from the estate, which makes it the easiest evening out on a winter stay.

4. Halloween at Rockingham Castle

If your break falls at the end of October, Rockingham Castle runs Halloween events from Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 October 2026. The castle overlooks the Welland valley and is one of the most atmospheric places in the area on an autumn afternoon.

It is about 20 minutes from 14 Acres. The main season ends in September, so late October is the last chance of the year to visit. Our Rockingham Castle guide has the history and the best places to eat nearby.

A Note from Susan

“My favourite winter weekend here starts with a cold, bright morning at Foxton Locks and ends with the heating on and a film in the lodge by five o’clock. Put the heating up in the bathroom before you go out, bring proper boots for the towpath, and book your pub lunch ahead on a Saturday. Winter is when the estate feels closest to nature, with frost on the lawns and birds on the pond, and I think it is when our guests rest best.”

“It was a stunning property and absolutely perfect. Beautiful fittings and furniture, lovely and warm, comfortable beds and gorgeous bathrooms. We were a group of five friends from school and it was just what we wanted! In fact, it was so lovely, we didn’t really venture out much, as it was just perfect staying in and hunkering down! (The weather was freezing cold outside to be honest!). Susan had made every effort to make it perfect. We had the most special weekend together, made all the more perfect by this stunning property. Highly recommended!”

“Lovely stay in a very eco and hi-tech house. Underfloor heating was great during the cold weather, as was the ability to set the temp for each room individually. We look forward to going back again in future.”
