Most guides to Market Harborough turn it into a 9-best-things-to-do listicle. This one is different. I have written it as a slow day, the way I send my own guests out for a properly relaxed afternoon in town.
Market Harborough is small. Genuinely small. You can walk between everything I describe below in 10 minutes or less, and the day works whether you start at 10am or noon. Wear shoes you can walk in, leave the car at one of the central car parks, and take your time.
All distances and times below are from The Loft at 14 Acres in Clipston, my luxury countryside retreat 10 minutes south of town.
Visiting from 14 Acres? The Barn, The Loft and The Cottage all sit on our private estate in Clipston, walking distance to country trails and a short drive to the attractions in this guide.

Start with market day on The Square
The town’s market is held on Tuesdays and Saturdays on The Square in the centre of town. It is small, friendly and very much a working local market rather than a tourist attraction, which is part of the charm.
You will find seasonal local produce, baked goods, cheese, plants and a few craft stalls. Get there mid-morning for the best atmosphere and a coffee from one of the surrounding indie cafes.
If you want the official line on stalls and times, the Harborough Market website has the up-to-date listings.
The Old Grammar School and St Dionysius church
The most photographed building in town is the Old Grammar School, a 1614 timber-framed school on stilts in the middle of the High Street. It is striking up close. Behind it sits St Dionysius church, a fine medieval parish church with a spire that punctuates almost every view of the town.
Both are open access during the day. Spend ten minutes around the Old Grammar School, then walk into St Dionysius for the cool quiet of the nave. From there it is a short walk to the indie shopping streets.

Indie shopping: Coventry Road, St Mary’s Place and the High Street
Market Harborough has held on to a strong indie retail scene. Coventry Road, St Mary’s Place and the High Street together host independent bookshops, boutiques, antique dealers, homeware shops, a couple of small galleries and several specialist food shops.
It is the kind of town where you walk around with a notebook of small finds and end up posting them home. Bring an empty bag.
Lunch and afternoon cafe
For lunch, my regulars in town are The Angel Hotel, Joules Yard, and a few of the cafes near St Mary’s Place that change menu seasonally. All do strong vegetarian options and proper coffee.

The Welland river walk
The town sits on the River Welland and the river walk is the easiest way to round off a slow day. The full circular loop takes around 90 minutes at a relaxed pace and links to Welland Park on the south edge of town.
Welland Park itself is a gentle, well-kept town park with an aviary, a playground, and an outdoor cafe in summer. Our Welland Park guide has more on what to do there if you want to extend the day.
Drive home, dinner at the village pub
Once the afternoon light starts to drop, the drive back to 14 Acres in Clipston takes 10 minutes. Most guests pause at one of the village pubs (The Bulls Head in Clipston, or The George at Great Oxendon) for an early dinner before getting back to the retreat.
I send most couples staying at The Cottage out for this exact loop on their first day, and most families staying at The Barn on the Saturday morning of their stay.
A note from Susan
“Market Harborough is small but it is a real working market town. I send guests out with no plan beyond market day, the church, a long lunch and the river walk. They come back genuinely surprised at how good a slow day in a market town can be.”
